Navigating School Transitions with Chiropractic Care

Starting school is a big step for our little ones, and for parents too! From wearing uniforms and tying shoelaces to carrying backpacks, meeting new teachers, and adjusting to routines, these new experiences can be both exciting and overwhelming. Things like sitting still, reading, writing, focusing, and making new friends are all new demands on a developing brain and body.

At ONE Chiropractic Studio Utrecht and Amersfoort, we care for many children during this important stage of growth and development. As kids begin school, their brains - especially the prefrontal cortex and left hemisphere - are still developing. These areas of the brain control emotional regulation, behavioural control, focus, problem-solving, fine motor skills, and structured learning like maths and science.

Because the nervous system is still maturing, behaviour is one of the best windows into how well a child is adapting to life at school and home. Some children will easily thrive in new environments, while others may show signs that their nervous system is struggling to regulate and integrate all of this change. Our chiropractors are skilled in taking care of kids struggling with:

  • Emotional regulation (tantrums, meltdowns, easily frustrated)

  • Behavioural regulation (impulsivity, restlessness, resistance)

  • Focus and concentration issues

  • Fine motor skills (e.g. handwriting)

  • Oculomotor control (e.g. reading)

  • Poor sleep

  • Tummy aches or digestive issues

  • Poor posture

Many of these signs can be traced back to an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system, one that is "stuck" in fight-or-flight mode. This constant stress response can make it harder for a child's brain (and also an adults) to process information, self-regulate emotions, and focus. In some cases, retained primitive reflexes or gaps in early development may also affect posture, coordination, and learning readiness.

Our paediatric chiropractic care at ONE Chiropractic Studio is extremely gentle, specific, and always adapted to each child's age, size, and stage of development. Chiropractic adjustments look very different from those for adults: there are no forceful movements, and no "popping" or "cracking." Instead, we use precise, light techniques that are safe and effective for delicate developing bodies. A recent inquiry into paediatric chiropractic care in Australia found that 99.6% of parents reported a positive experience with chiropractic care for their child, and there were 0 reports of harm.

Our team will always take the time to explain exactly what we are doing before we do it, ensuring you feel comfortable, confident, and fully informed throughout your child's visit. After your consultation, your chiropractor will review all findings, including any neurological or neuro-structural assessments, as well as provide a personalised care plan that supports your child's healing, development, and lays the foundation for their nervous system to thrive.
